Concluding Thoughts

When I began this course I expected to learn about various books that taught about diversity, and I did to a degree. But I think the most important point is that I learned to look at people and see them not their skin color, disability, or age. I learned to be understanding of others to accept what is different, not try to change it. Tolerance is a key component to our society. We must learn to love one another despite our differences. We should embrace our neighbor with love and kindness.

I will admit that growing up I did not experience diversity. I was raised to think a certain way. As an adult I have opportunities to work with and go to school with races other than my own. I've grown to understand other cultures. Just the other day I attended my nieces birthday party. Among the guest was a family from Venezuela and a biracial family. I was honestly excited to see that we can come together. I enjoyed talking with the families and learning about them.

While I can't change society I can instill in my children and hopefully my students that we are to love thy neighbor.
