My Perspective on Diversity
If I'm being honest I never gave much thought to the lack of diversity on t.v., in the work place, or in children's books for that matter. It wasn't until recently that I began to notice commercials and advertisements that starred people from various races, interracial couples, or people with disabilities to name a few.
Still I didn't realize the lack of diversity in children's books. I didn't notice these things because my race is predominantly represented in media. Diversity continues to be underrepresented in many mainstream mediums, particularly children’s literature. When we talk about diversity we go beyond skin color. Diversity encompasses age, religion, gender, sexuality, and people with disabilities. Children need exposure to other cultures. The benefits of having diverse books allows people/children to learn about other cultures. Children of color need to see themselves in books, to have role models. It is important that we see the contributions of all cultures.
